Kamala Harris and Pop Culture May Be Just the Best Thing Yet

By: Emily Ao

Since President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential Election and the endorsing of Vice President Kamala Harris, the online world has gone into a frenzy. Netizens have flooded social media with their support for Harris.

Apparently, Harris’ supporters have tactics that Bidens’ don’t. With Charli XCX’s new album, brat, and other popular hits by artists like Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Mitski, Harris’ supporters have found ways to incorporate an old speech into songs.

According to an article in the New York Times, a fan-favorite quote was first featured when Harris was “addressing the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.” The line, which says, “‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? [laughs] You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you,” is heard everywhere across posts on social media, along with a coconut and palm tree emoji to signify Harris’s campaign.

This way, these humorous audios easily become viral. In addition to a funny laugh, fans have noticed how effective these “remixes” are in promoting Harris online, particularly towards Gen Z.

It’s truly inspiring how Harris and her supporters manage to bring her up front despite Biden’s sudden decision. At this rate, if fans keep up the hard work and dedication, Harris and her team may just be doing enough to gain her a mass following.
