On August 6th, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris was certified as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. She became the top contestant on July 21, 2024 when President Biden decided not to run for a second term.
After being nominated, Kamala Harris named Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice president.
“I am proud to announce that I’ve asked Tim Walz to be my running mate,” Kamala Harris said. “As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work.”
Tim Walz was born and raised in West Point, Nebraska. He graduated from Chadron State College with a degree in education. After he graduated, he began teaching at Alliance High School in Nebraska.
Later on, he moved to Mankato West High School in Minnesota. There, he coached football, leading the team to their first state championship. Tim Walz also served in the US Army National Guard for 24 years.
After he retired, he decided to begin his political career. In 2006, Tim Walz beat the Republican incumbent and received a seat in the Congress. For 12 years, Tim Walz stayed in that position. But then in 2018, he ran for Governor of Minnesota, and successfully took the spot and has stayed there since.
But now, Tim Walz has new opportunities to take an even bigger role in politics.
