This Sunday, Lil Nas X did not show up to the BET Awards because he was angry about not being nominated. He had wanted to get an award at the ceremony but got rejected when he got zero nominations. The following week, he released a song that chants “F*** BET.”
Lil Nas X felt rejected by his fellow black producers. He posted, “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
He also tweeted sarcastically, “thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!”
BET responded that they loved him and that they weren’t in charge of voting. He’s been nominated twice before and gotten two BET Hip-Hop Awards.
He is getting support on this issue but also criticism from other celebrities. [What have other celebrities said?]Many have responded to his comments about having no nominations this year. Bias in voting groups for awards has been seen before, though.
Lil Nas X himself is confused about zero nominations. He said that, “this is my point exactly how can I get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just 1 nomination from my own people?”
