Man Throws Cake at Mona Lisa

By: Chloe Sun

Would you have the guts to damage one of the most expensive and well-known paintings in the world?

The original Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci from 1503 through 1519. The painting hangs in the largest room in the Louvre. Not only is it well known, but it is also one of the most expensive paintings in the world. However, a man recently threw a cake at the painting.

A video on social media shows that security was escorting a man away as he yelled in French. “Think of the earth! There are people destroying the earth! That’s why I did this” he remarked.

Another video shows someone clearing the cake off the protective glass around the Mona Lisa, as onlookers filmed the aftermath of the incident. The 36-year-old man was detained and sent to the psychiatric unit, according to the Associated Press (AP). This wasn’t the first time the Mona Lisa had been attacked — an acid attack damaged the Mona Lisa in the 1950s.
