In Maui, there was a massive fire that destroyed everything in its path beginning on the 6th of August. So far there have been 93 reported deaths.
This fire is extremely powerful and did a lot of damage. The estimated cost of all the destruction from the fire is estimated to be around 6 billion dollars. This is considered the worst fire in the past century for the US, and the worst natural disaster in Hawaii. At least 2,200 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in the fire, 86 percent of which are residential buildings. The Maui Chief of Police John Pelletier says that the death toll is likely to rise. This is because “none of us really know the size of it yet.”
The fire also hurt a lot of people. While there are at least 93 reported deaths, only two of the bodies have been identified. This is because most of the bodies have been reduced to ash. Also, there was little warning of the fire. This was partially because the emergency alarms that were set up failed to sound. Officials say that they will check the state’s emergency notification systems to determine what went wrong. After the fire died down police dogs are searching in the rubble from the fire and give an occasional bark to inform the handler of possible corpses. Near the day of the fire, the winds in Maui were very high with them exceeding 80 miles per hour and that is probably why the power line fell and started the fire.
