On June 2,2024 history was made as Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as Mexico’s first female president. Sheinbaum pledged to lessen rising violence in Mexico by adding more security cameras, along with more police officers throughout the nation. She also promised to reduce 50% of use of non-renewable energy in the next 6 years by investing billions of dollars into renewable energy and mass transportation projects.
Sheinbaum will enter her role as president on October 1. Before she was elected Sheinbaum was a scientist that studied climate change, with a PhD in energy engineering. She spent most of her career supporting the transition from non-renewable energy to cleaner energy sources.
Sheinbaum’s grandparents immigrated from Bulgaria to Mexico because they were fleeing from the Nazi’s during that time. Both of her parents were also scientists just like her.
After working at a renowned lab studying climate change, she earned the position of secretary of environment for Mexico City. After that Sheinbaum served as the mayor of Mexico City. Some notable accomplishments during that time were that she was the first female head of government, and also the first to have Jewish roots. She was also able to half the amount of homicides that happened in Mexico City. Then she stepped down from the position of mayor of Mexico City to run for president of Mexico which she succeeded in doing.
