Claudia Sheinbaum’s election on June 2nd, 2024 will always be a mark in history. Not only is she is Mexico’s first female president, but she also survived the rash assassinations in the 2024 elections.
As the first female president of this 203-year-old republic, Sheinbaum will take office on the 1st of October. She plans to suppress violence in Mexico when she goes into office.
Before Sheinbaum became Mexico’s first female president, she was Mexico City’s first female mayor. She held on to her role for 5 years until in 2023, she stepped down to run for the presidential election. Sheinbaum’s parents were both scientists, and before Sheinbaum got into politics, she was a climate scientist.
Sheinbaum’s goal is to pull back on Mexico’s dependency of fossil fuels so that Mexico can become a more clean nation. She also wants to reduce violence in Mexico.
However, during the campaign season, more than 30 candidates were assassinated. Yolanda Sanchez Figueroa and her bodyguard were murdered just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected. Another councilwoman Esmeralda Garzon, a supporter of Sheinbaum’s political party was shot dead when she was outside of her house. Garzon was supposedly not running in the elections.
After Claudia Sheinbaum’s vow to stop the violencein Mexico, candidate rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, says that, “I saw a Mexico with a lot of pain and violence. I wished that she could solve the severe problems our people have.”
When the president takes office, we shall see what she will do about the ongoing violence in Mexico.
