Monsters that Actually Exist: How to Defeat Them

By: Sandy Wang

Rune struggled to keep herself from not screaming as she fell five stories down into her grandparents’ backyard. However, instead of landing on the concrete path as she had expected, she landed on the trampoline, which bounced her up so high that she went over the fence.

After standing up and brushing herself off, Rune found herself on the edge of the forest beyond her grandparents’ mansion. She pulled out the page about unicorns and speedread over it, eventually finding that part that said where unicorns lived. According to the monster book, unicorns lived underground in forests and spent most of their lives as squirrels, only turning into their true form if an incantation is read.

Luckily, Rune was standing right in front of a forest so she mustered up some courage and took her first step inside. Immediately, she could see that it wasn’t going to be easy finding a unicorn, as there were what seemed to be millions of holes in the ground and hundreds more squirrels scampering around. However, after taking another look at the paper, she realized it said that unicorns were attracted to, unsurprisingly, corn.

Therefore, Rune ran to the nearest grocery store and bought a cob of corn, paying with apple pay on her phone, which she had managed to snatch on the way out. Already out of breath, she ran back to the forest with the corn in one hand and her phone in another. After arriving at the forest, she placed the corn on the ground and hid behind some bushes, waiting for some squirrels to approach it so that she could recite the incantation.

Suddenly, Rune heard growling behind her. She turned around to see dozens of red eyes staring back at her. She could just barely make out the silhouette of a pack of wolves, slowly creeping towards her one step at a time. Frantically scurrying out from behind the bushes, she began to run but was quickly surrounded on all sides. Without another choice, Rune read the incantation, but nothing happened, and just then, the wolves pounced, about to make her their dinner.
