Lately, Disney has received many controversial comments due to the lesbian representation shown in its most recent movie, ‘Lightyear.’
Alisha Hawthorne, one of the female characters in ‘Lightyear’, performs a scene where she kisses her significant other, Kiko. Because both Alisha and Kiko are presented as female characters, Disney received countless negative comments from its audience. Numerous Muslim countries have also decided to ban the film.
In most of the Muslim religions, being LGBTQ is thought to be immoral or even irreligious. Members of the Islamic LGBTQ community were frequently subjected to discrimination, such as being imprisoned or even sentenced to death.
However, Muslim countries are not the only ones against the LGBTQ community. There have been plenty of other areas in the U.S. where the lesbian kiss scene in ‘Lightyear’ has either been cut out or censored.
Additionally, the current “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida prohibits “instructions on sexual orientation and gender identity” for early elementary students. While this bill takes effect throughout the state of Florida, Disney is criticized for its lack of response.
On the other hand, Disney responds to this act by restoring the once cut out lesbian kissing scene in ‘Lightyear.’
