Nearly 1,200 immigrants from Italy arrive by boat in a day

On July 23, over 1,000 people immigrated to ports in Sicily, Italy. Why are they moving?

When the first batch of boats came, officials successfully retrieved 674 people and found five dead off the coast of Calabria.

When the second batch of boats came, 522 people were saved from more than 15 boats. The rest were brought to Lampedusa on Saturday. The ports are main arrival points for people from Europe and Middle Eastern countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

Lampedusa often receives immigrants from Europe. According to news broadcasts, the port of Lampedusa will be overpopulated in the coming weeks as more people arrive. It is only meant to hold about 350 people. Now it is reaching well over a thousand.

Overall, the ports need to have more space for future immigrants. and most immigrants need to pass the Mediterranean sea to get to ports like Lampedusa, most people don’t make it past the Mediterranean Sea and often get lost or missing during the trip.and most people don’t make it pass the Mediterranean sea. Over 3,000 people have died or gone missing while trying to get to Europe. According to United Nations High High Commissions.
