Everyone knows Barbie, the picture-perfect pretty blonde doll. Even if they don’t, it’ll be impossible to miss her in the kid’s section of stores like Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.
Due to her fame, Barbie has her own shows, movies, and cartoons. There are also teasers of the first new live-action Barbie movie on July 22, 2023. The film follows Barbie going into the “real world” after strange occurrences happen in her world. When Barbie and Ken are allowed to enter the “real world,” they discover the fun and danger that occurs there.
Production for the Barbie Movie started in March 2022 in Los Angeles, California. With Director Greta Gerwig, the production team, and the cast, they are determined to make the first-ever live-action Barbie a success. They went to great lengths to make the movie as “Barbie-looking” as possible.
So, with the team giving it their all, they caused a global pink paint shortage.
Film production designer Sarah Greenwood claims that the movie used all the pink paint available.
“The world ran out of pink,” Greenwood told Architectural Digest two weeks ago.
Gerwig, the director, wanted an “authentic artificiality” to have a vibe of childlessness.
“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount, I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much,” Gerwig said.
People questioned the team if it was necessary for them to use so much pink paint for the movie that it caused a global shortage.
Many adults and kids now associate Barbie with the color pink. Thus, what kind of Barbie movie would it be if it didn’t have too much pink in it?
In many of Barbie’s shows and movies like Life in the Dreamhouse, Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper, Barbie Dreamtopia: Festival of Fun, etc., you can see the continuous use of pink in all of them.
In conclusion, the team needed to use up all the pink paint to create the movie. It just wouldn’t be right if the set for Barbie’s World didn’t have enough of that nostalgic color the audience associate with Barbie. It would leave a sense of unease.
