Jim Tyrer was a star offensive tackle at Ohio State University. He played in the AFL for the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. He retired in 1974 after spending his last season with Washington. He was always a key piece on any team and led a few to super bowls. When the voting for his potential Hall of Fame induction came, he fell short of the number of votes he needed.
Early in the morning of September 15, 1980, he shot and killed his wife, then killed himself. Their children were unharmed. Stefanie Tyrer, his youngest daughter, said “This wasn’t the man we knew.”
The children will always remember their parents as great humans who accomplished many things during their lifetime. Martha was a great mother and was very supportive of Jim and football.
Jim spent his last day at a Chiefs game with his youngest son, before he took his life and his wife’s. James was never very affectionate, but that day he was, his kids said.
