Six days. That is how long it took Fola David to finish his masterpiece. It is not any old painting it is an enormous drawing! David hopes that “Unity in Diversity,” the name of his drawing, will set a new Guinness World Record for the largest drawing ever created by a person.
The drawing is a whopping 1,050 square meters (about twice the area of a basketball court). It was so big that it was created in a stadium in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city. David, who is also a doctor, spent nearly a week creating the drawing that he had big hopes for.
Nigeria is a country in West Africa and is the most populous country in Africa, estimated at 218.5 million people in 2022. It is made up of about 250 ethnic groups and is remarkably diverse, with religions such as Islam and Christianity.
As a way to celebrate and express diversity, David decided to draw his picture.
“Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create that divide between us,” David said.
After completing his work on Sunday night. David said that his art is also a celebration of cultures in Nigeria.
With hopes of setting the record, the Guinness World Records still must check Fola David’s work to see if he really beat the previous record set by Indian artist Ravi Soni in 2021. Soni’sart was a giant 629.98 square meters (about twice the area of a tennis court)
