Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has been cleared for the 2023 Australian Open. He was previously banned from three years, but the Australian Open has overturned their decision, granting him a visa for January’s Australian Open.
A federal government source has confirmed that the decision had been made to revoke the ban. This decision from the federal government source has a chance to win his 10th title in Melbourne, Australia. It will be his first grand slam tournament since Wimbledon at the start of July.
Djokovic required two ticks of acceptance from Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to play in the Open. They involved Mr. Giles using his ministerial discretion.
Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan said, “As a tennis fan, he would “love to see Novak back playing at the Australian Open.” But Mr. Tehan also said, ““However, the government must ensure that its decision is a considered one that protects the integrity.” So, what he is saying is the government must be careful that the decision is a considered one and it protects integrity.
Djokovic was also not allowed to play in the U.S. Open this year because he was not vaccinated. At the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, Djokovic said there had been “nothing official yet.” But his lawyers were talking to the Australian referees.
“We are waiting,” Djokovic said. “They are communicating with the government of Australia. That is all I can tell you for now.” The federal government scrapped the Covid-19 vaccination requirement to enter Australia in July. In late October Djokovic saw some signs that he would be able to play in January at the Australian Open.
This is Djokovic’s first ATP title since Wimbledon in late July. So, if he wins, he will tie Nadal’s staggering 22 Grand Slam titles.
