On July 29th, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, British diver Tom Daley won Silver in synchronized diving alongside Noah Williams. Daley had recently come out of retirement and competed so his son could see him dive.

Daley’s son Robbie (age 6) had persuaded his father to attend the Olympics once again, and as Daley dove, his friends and family watched him.

“It’s just so special,” Daley said.”He’s [Robbie] six years old and I hope he’ll remember some of it.”
Some are praising what a great father Daley is, doing all he could, rejoining the Olympics after retiring and winning silver just so his son could learn and be inspired by his father.

Daley is the first diver to complete the five Olympic games and carried the flag alongside Helen Glover at this year’s opening ceremony.[1]

Diving became an Olympic sport over 100 years ago at the 1904 Summer Games in St. Louis. The sport features eight events: four individual and four synchronized, including the 3-meter springboard, 10-meter platform, synchronized 3-meter springboard, and synchronized 10-meter platform, for both men and women. Chinese divers Yang Hao and Lian Junjie competed in the Olympics this summer and received a total score of 490.35, winning them gold and ensuring that China is still in the lead for diving.[3] Great Britain received silver receiving the score 463.44.[2]

Being one of the three to win a medal in his event, Daley’s Olympic career now consists of 5 medals, the silver medal being his fifth, and having one gold, three bronzes, and a silver, he has gotten a full set.

“Doing it in front of my son who asked me to come back is so special. I now have one of every color, I’ve completed the set,” Daley said.

Now Daley can safely retire, having proven how good of a father he is to Robbie, competing in the Olympics once again for his son and completing the Olympic diving set.

Tom Daley attended the 2024 Paris Olympics because of his son, and because of this, he had a chance to complete his Olympic set, and he can say he did this for his son.
