Para-Climbing Introduced at The Paralympics

By: Amelia Wang

Para-climbing will make its first appearance at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, California, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced.

The International Paralympic Committee has announced that para-climbing will make its big debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, California. That means that in total the LA28 Paralympics will feature a total of 23 different games and sports.

This move follows the introduction of climbing at the Tokyo Olympic Games back in 2020.
“Para-climbing is a fast-paced, exhilarating sport that I am sure will attract new audiences to the Paralympic Games,” said IPC president Andrew Parsons. “You only have to see the sport’s impact on the Olympic Games program to understand this.”

Those in the organizing committee for each Paralympic Games have the option to add one or more additional events. These events are then either rejected or approved after careful consideration.

The committee for the LA28 had to choose between accepting para-climbing or para-surfing to the IPC. Both sports haven’t been included at a Paralympic Games before. Para-climbing is the fifth newest sport to be added in the past 12 years.

“Thank you to the IPC for welcoming us as part of the Paralympic family, but thanks must also go to the LA28 organizing committee for believing in our sport and making history for the both of us,” said Marco Scolaris, the president of the International Federation of Sport Climbing.
