Rising above 100 degrees, many northeastern cities have suffered or killed due to the hotness throughout the past week. Many people have been killed or highly injured due to this awful weather in the United States.
In Newark, temperatures reached higher than 101 degrees, soaring high above the record set in 2010, with 99 degrees. It was the fifth day with a temperature above 100 degrees in the city.
According to the NewYorkTimes, it was confirmed that in New York City, one of the first heat-related deaths occurred on July 23. In Boston, the highest temperature was 100 degrees, breaking the old record of 98 degrees, which was also set in 2010. As a result, many athletes who trained for months and maybe years will not have the chance to compete in the Boston Triathlon, which was cancelled due to the heatwaves.
In Providence, the temperature averaged around 97 degrees, which beat the record set in 1987, with 94 degrees.
Many Americans are trying to escape the heat by going indoors or in the library. “You can hit the beach or head to the pool to keep cool, too!” New York City posted on Twitter.
Due to the hot weathers, many people fear that the high temperatures would damage the power grids. And to protect the power grids, people suggested unplugging appliances like televisions and computers or turning the air-conditioning to 78 degrees.
However, Richard Bann, a meteorologist, and the National Weather Service said that on Monday, it is expected that temperatures are going to be nearly as high as they were on Sunday but that the heat should be cooling down in the Northeast and other countries.
“It’s Tuesday by the time we get a push of cooler air into the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic,” he said.
