crashed outside of São Paulo, Brazil. According to The New York Times, all 62 passengers were killed! The plane crashed in a yard of a home, but fortunately, nobody on the ground was hurt.
The airplane was 14-year-old ATR 72, a twin engine turboprop. According to Brazilian officials, the plane was in compliance with the country’s regulations. Investigators think that it was icing, which is deadly for a plane, that caused it, but the plane was fine when it flew from São Paulo to Cascavel. Even if there were icing, the pilot could just drop the plane to a lower altitude, and because of higher temperatures, the ice would melt, thus solving the problem. Brazil is also not the same as Antarctica.
Some civilians had videos in their hands. Video filmed by people on the ground showed the plane was spinning horizontally as it fell from the sky. After the plane disappeared from view, a giant plume of black smoke was seen rising from the spot. One video showed a house on fire and a yard full of the plane’s bits, including shredded fuselage, twisted metal and part of the cockpit.
Experts are not very sure how the plane crashed and why it crashed but Flightradar24 said there was an active warning of severe icing in the area where the plane lost control, and also reports of turbulence and thunderstorms. They will throw the plane off course and possibly damage the plane.
Investigators will keep on investigating this case.
