President Joe Biden delivers remarks during the CNN Presidential Debate at the CNN Studios on June 27, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Introduction
President Joe Biden’s performance in last Thursday’s debate left many questioning whether or not he should continue his candidacy. So, can President Joe Biden end his run for president? The answer is yes; however, he will also have no influence on who will be the candidate in his place in that case.

Voter’s Choice
According to a CBS News poll, 86% of voters believe that Biden’s performance in office will be jeopardized by his age, 71% of voters are concerned about the decisions he might make in office, 66% of voters are concerned about his records as president, and 59% of people are concerned about his ability to campaign effectively. In addition, 72% of voters believe that Biden should not be running for the presidential elections. However, Biden still has a chance to strengthen his presidential run unlike if the debate were to take place at its usual time in September.

Biden’s Response
Biden “spoke at a campaign rally in North Carolina the following day. ‘I don’t debate as well as I used to,’ he acknowledged, but added, ‘I know how to get things done…” Biden has currently not shown signs of leaving the election.

Possible Replacements
In the case Mr. Biden resigns, possible replacements include Ms. Harris, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan; Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania; Gov. Gavin Newsom of California; Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois; and Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky.” (The New York Times, 2024)
