Prince George of Britain was photographed with a wide grin on his face during his 9th birthday. It has been a tradition for the royal family to post birthday photos online. But this time, the photos are accompanied with a controversy.

The BBC said on Thursday that it would pay “substantial damage” to the former nanny William and Prince Harry, who is now known as Alexandra Pettifer, for “false and malicious” accusations of her. Many have claimed that Pettifer previously had an affair with Prince Charles and an abortion as a part of BBC journalist’s, Martin Bashir, attempt to get an exclusive interview.

In 1995, a shocking BBC interview with Diana gave insight to her disappointing marriage with Prince Charles. During the interview, Diana said that “there were three of us in this marriage.” The third person probably referred to Camilla Parker-Bowles, who is now Charles’ current wife. A few years later, another investigation stated that Bashir used fake documents and “deceitful behavior” to set up the meeting.

Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, tweeted: “While I’m delighted to see that another innocent victim of this appalling scandal is being vindicated, it’s amazing to me that no criminal charges have been levelled against those responsible, yet.”

The BBC Director General Tim Davie acknowledge what happened on Thursday by saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize publicly to her [Pettifer], to The Prince of Wales, and to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, for the way in which Princess Diana was deceived and the subsequent impact on all their lives.”

Later, Davie said that had dishonored Diana and the royal family, as well as let the whole audience down. He added, “I have decided that the BBC will never show the program again; nor will we license it in whole or part to other broadcasters.”
