Carrie Fisher’s dress from the famous movie Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope worn by Carrie Fisher in the film A New Hope was put up at an auction and was expected to be bought for at least $1,000,000 ,minimum. Instead, the final and highest bidder only went as far as $975,000.
Propstore, the company running the auction, said they were allowing post-auction bidders, apparently hoping to get to the goal of at least 1,000,000 dollars. “It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale, or may be re-offered again in a future auction,” the company had stated.
The dress is currently the only surviving version of the costume of the gown, which served as the focal point of the Star Wars scene. The white gown serves as the focal point of the scene. It’s even the last object seen in the film, a split second before it transitions to the credits.
“The dress is a real relic. It’s an absolute piece of film history,” said Brandon Alinger, the chief operating officer of Propstore.” When Star Wars fans see it, they stop in their tracks, they gasp a bit at the sight of it, because they recognize the significance of it,” Alinger said.
Princess Leia’s dress is believed not only to be her last surviving dress from the film, but was believed thought to no longer be in existence before being recovered from an attic in London. The dress took over eight months to restore, as Propstore states that all modifications were “carried out to top archival standards and [are] therefore fully reversible.”
The dress was only one of the 1,486 other items in the audition. It was auctioned alongside nearly 200 Star Wars memorabilia such as signed posters by Hamill, which were later donated to fund the Ukrainian war effort. Additionally, Star Wars memorabilia such as Qui-Gon Jinn’s replica blade from Episode I – The Phantom Menace as well as an original lightsaber from his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi is still currently on auction can currently be bought.
