In Israel, at the end of July 2023, many protesters marched in high temperatures for five days from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. They continued to protest about the government wanting to limit the power of the court.
This has caused many problems, including a group from the army striking against the government. 10,000 Israelis from the army have announced that they would stop going to their duties. This was also claimed by 1,000 Air Force Members (New York Times, 2023).
The amount of people protesting was huge, reaching at least 20,000. The numbers will only get greater as there are still many more days of protest to go through.
Even the protestors are surprised at how many people have joined them. “Have you ever seen anything like this?” said Ilana Holzman, a protester from Tel Aviv. Since there were so many protesters on the roads, cars were often forced to merge into one lane.
For five days, protestors camped on the way until they reached Jerusalem. Then, they camped in Jerusalem Park below the Parliament. “We won’t live in a country where the government has too much power over us,” said Navot Silberstein, a protester.
The law that started all these protests was concerned with limiting Supreme Court power.
“A group of former senior Israeli security leaders released a joint letter calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to [reschedule] a vote on the law unless it was revised by consensus” (New York Times, 2023).
