Pushing for Abortion Rights

Lizz Winstead, a comedian and producer, is also an abortion rights activist. She has been using comedy to urge people to push for broader rights on her show, “The Daily Show”. According to the article “Using Comedy to Push for Abortion Rights”, she likes to talk about abortion frequently it and deliver her message through what she calls, “a little schtick, a little song, a little taboo talk.”

On a show recently organized by Winstead called, “Bro v. Wade”, comedian Joyelle Nicole

Johnson said, “Don’t be ashamed of having an abortion,” you could be ashamed of how you got pregnant, but not the act of an abortion. At 60 years old, Winstead has a goal in mind.

According to the article, she uses ‘humor and men’ to “advocate for abortion as health care and as a fundamental human right.” Winstead said, “Politicians aren’t going to save us; laughter won’t either.” But with her goal in mind, and the support of people who work with her, she hopes to eliminate any shame women have about getting an abortion or, fighting for their rights. When Winstead was younger, her family was criticized for her controversial beliefs. The article says, “Her shows were boycotted; old employers were called in efforts at intimidation. She ‘paid a lot of money,’ she said, to erase her personal data from the internet.” Now, Winstead is fearless and stated, “there’s no place I can get fired from — come at me, I don’t care.”

Friends of Winstead describe her as “one of those — you meet them throughout life —

boundless energy, high-strung, talk very quickly, gesticulate wildly, kind of people.” Winstead has shown her hard work by persevering and fighting for the cause no matter what.
