Many million years ago, after the earth was born, humanity opened its eyes and touched their appendages to planet Earth. They had four appendages, and they were appendages of infinite possibility. Everyone knows what happens next.
Humans clawed their way across the world in packs. They found a suitable spot to seat themselves and were satisfied. They did not transform.
And there were those who were not satisfied. They roamed across the terrain and crushed their enemies for no reason other than petty conflicts. They used their appendages to mitigate and slaughter. And it didn’t matter if it was one civilization or a million, they did not transform.
No. The next beings were of the sea. Land roamers had no right to their horrifying power. Who did?
Those who sought to sink their claws into lands across the oceans. Those who are willing to cross oceans of a thousand miles to get food for their empire.
They transformed.
Here’s how it starts. They stumble upon some land. “They” constitute a leader, and the people that he brought with him. They decide that they should start an empire. Right then and there. With some land and a plan. They become one of the beings. The land they claim will become one with the leader, and as are the people he brings with him.
The beings are octopus with the head of men. The head is the one declares itself the leader of his pack, and makes the decision to claw out as much as it can from the world. Its tentacles, too, are the hands of a person.
Hands. The appendage that humans have used to crush everything. Everyone and everything. They create, but the things they create end up destroying more things anyway. Now they are infinite, and each hand has the same intent. Create destruction. That is the sad law of the beast.
It’s a being of many names, and there are many such beings. Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands. In the end, it was called Colonialism.
