This week, we will focus on how to identify the main idea of a text – a critical skill for reading fluency AND comprehension!

Objective: Students will be able to read a passage with appropriate speed, accuracy, and emotion, and then concisely state the main idea of the text.

Essential Questions:

  1. What is the main idea?
  2. How do I identify the main idea of a text?
  3. How can identifying main ideas help me to be a better reader?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. The main idea of a text is what the text is mostly about, usually a sentence or less in length.
  2. One can identify the main idea of a text by 1) finding key details, 2) paraphrasing these key details, and 3) asking oneself what each section is about, in one sentence maximum.
  3. Identifying main ideas can help us become better readers by allowing us to hone in on the most important aspects of a text, as opposed to insignificant or irrelevant information.
