Objective: Students will be able to read a passage with appropriate speed, accuracy, and emotion, and then concisely state the main idea of the text.
Essential Questions:
- What is the main idea?
- How do I identify the main idea of a text?
- How can identifying main ideas help me to be a better reader?
Enduring Understandings:
- The main idea of a text is what the text is mostly about, usually a sentence or less in length.
- One can identify the main idea of a text by 1) finding key details, 2) paraphrasing these key details, and 3) asking oneself what each section is about, in one sentence maximum.
- Identifying main ideas can help us become better readers by allowing us to hone in on the most important aspects of a text, as opposed to insignificant or irrelevant information.
