Objective: Students will learn about common types of poetry and their important elements.

Essential Questions:

  1. What is a poem?
  2. What are four common types of poetry?
  3. What is a stanza?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. A poem is a type of literature. Poems convey a thought, describe a scene, or tell a story. This is accomplished through the concentration and lyrical arrangement of words.
  2. Four common types of poetry are haikus, limericks, sonnets, and narrative poems.
  3. A stanza is a group of lines within the verse of a poem. It’s the equivalent of a paragraph in prose.
