Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will learn how to use literary terms and identify rhetorical devices to improve their understanding of a text and enrich their own writing.

Essential Questions:

  1. What are some key literary terms?
  2. What are rhetorical devices and why are they important?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. Some key literary terms are: setting, theme, characterization, climax, allusion, dialogue, exposition, fable, parable, allegory, and more!
  2. A rhetorical device is a use of language that is intended to have an effect on its audience.

Standards

Grade 6: L.6.3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. A. Vary sentence patterns for meaning (syntax), reader/listener interest, and style/voice. B. Maintain consistency in style and tone.

Grade 7: L.7.3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. A. Vary sentence patterns for meaning (syntax), reader/listener interest, and style/voice.
