Reading Lab #2: Vocabulary Knowledge (Gr. 3-5)

Objective: Students will be able to determine the meanings of complex words by utilizing context clues

Essential Questions:

  1. How do context clues help us to figure out the meaning of unknown words?
  2. How can a greater vocabulary knowledge help us to read more difficult texts?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.
  2. Becoming familiar with different types of context clues can help you to more efficiently figure out the definition of a word.
  3. A greater vocabulary knowledge can help readers to access texts that may be above their reading level because they will be better able to comprehend.

Materials:

  • Please read and print “A Day to Remember Family” by Lisa Avila; attached at the bottom of this syllabus. DO NOT FILL OUT THE TABLE – THIS IS PART OF THE ACTIVITY.
  • Pen or pencil
