Reading Lab #5: Vocabulary Knowledge
Class Syllabus – Grades 3-5
Objective: Students will be able to determine the meanings of complex words by utilizing the SNAP strategy.
Essential Questions:
- How can grouping words by their root, prefix, or suffix help us to learn more vocabulary?
- How does using words in a sentence and in conversation help us to understand them?
- How can a greater vocabulary knowledge help us to read more difficult texts?
Enduring Understandings:
- Root words are the core elements of words that cannot be reduced or broken down further.
- Prefixes are a group of letters placed before a root to change the meaning of a word
- Suffixes are a group of letters placed after a root to change the meaning of a word.
- Using words in our writing and in our conversations can help our brains to remember the definition of a word better.
- A greater vocabulary knowledge can help readers to access texts that may be above their reading level because they will be better able to comprehend.
