Reading Lab #5: Vocabulary (Gr. 6-8) 11/29/22

One of the most common types of questions on standardized tests and examinations have to do with vocabulary, and uncovering the meanings of unknown words, which is why we are revisiting some vocabulary strategies! This can be most common in science passages, so our students will be exploring these as they read texts about the human body. Take a look below for preparation and an idea of what we will be doing. Reading Lab #5: Vocabulary Knowledge

Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will be able to determine the meanings of complex words by utilizing the SNAP strategy.

Essential Questions:

  1. How can grouping words by their root, prefix, or suffix help us to learn more vocabulary?
  2. How does using words in a sentence and in conversation help us to understand them?
  3. How can a greater vocabulary knowledge help us to read more difficult texts?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. Root words are the core elements of words that cannot be reduced or broken down further.
  2. Prefixes are a group of letters placed before a root to change the meaning of a word
  3. Suffixes are a group of letters placed after a root to change the meaning of a word.
  4. Using words in our writing and in our conversations can help our brains to remember the definition of a word better.
  5. A greater vocabulary knowledge can help readers to access texts that may be above their reading level because they will be better able to comprehend.
