Real or AI produced?

By: Megan Wei

As AI technology improves quickly, it’s important to know how to tell the difference between real and fake content. Every day, people around the world are posting AI-generated material on social media and websites. Because of this, you need to pay attention to who posted something and check its details. Even popular viral content might be created by AI. Being careful about what you believe and share online is more important now than ever.

Always be aware of AI around you. These days, someone can just tell their computer to create any image they imagine, and AI can do it in just 3 seconds. Even if you think a friend’s post or a beautiful landscape is real and couldn’t possibly be fake, don’t underestimate what technology can do. AI can make images look so realistic that you might not even question if they’re fake. But even though AI is very advanced, there are still small details that people can notice to figure out if something is not genuine. For example, you might see little things that look off or unusual that can give away the real nature of the image. So, it’s important to stay cautious and pay attention to these details.

AI can be very useful in a lot of things, but it has to be careful about copyrighted logos and writing. To avoid breaking the rules, AI tries not to use exact designs. Sometimes, this means the letters or symbols in the images might look a bit unusual or like plain squiggles. This is because AI wants to make sure it doesn’t accidentally copy someone else’s work. Also pay attention to overperfection in faces or backgrounds. Sometimes AI work doesn’t make faces as realistic and tends to smooth over wrinkles and features. It also makes the background unnatural and fantasy-like. If the background looks too good to be true, that could also be a sign of AI.

In the future, figuring out what’s real and what’s made by AI might be as important as knowing how to stay safe. As we use more AI, being able to tell the difference will help us make sure we’re not being tricked and that we know what’s true. Being good at spotting AI will also help us trust the information we see and keep our personal information safe. So, learning to tell what’s real from what’s not is a good skill to build up now.
