Researcher Jane Goodall loved to read and explore nature when she was young. Her dream was to explore animals’ natural habitats, especially the ones she liked best.
When Jane was 23, she visited a farm in Kenya and met a man named Louis Leaky. Louis studied apes, mostly chimpanzees. Jane helped Louis study chimps, but it was not easy. Jane had to gain the animals’ trust to come close, and it took time.
To Jane, chimps are complicated and fascinating animals because they are intelligent and similar to humans.
Even though chimpanzees are fascinating creatures, they face the threat of habitat loss.
Jane established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 for environmental education, but Jane is thinking bigger. The environment is in danger, and deforestation and climate change threaten chimpanzees and other animals.
The fight about habitat loss made by Jane continues today. People can help the environment by, recycling, picking up trash and planting more plants.
