The use of robots, like Alexa and Echo, as companions for the elderly has become increasingly popular in recent years,. Many people believe that robots can bring company to the lives of seniors, who may find themselves isolated and lonely as they age.
Many elderly individuals, like Audrey and Ken Mattlin, live by themselves have found that robots can provide them with the companionship they need. These robots are designed to be human-like and can engage in conversation with seniors for extended periods of time. While Ken seems to be ambivalent about the new company, Audrey has found quite a connection with their robots, even having longer conversations with the robots than with her husband.
As elders age, there’s higher possibly of increased isolation and loneliness which, in turn, can lead to depression. As their children and grandchildren get married and start their own lives, they may not be able to visit their parents and grandparents as often as they would like. However, with the new robot technology, there may be a solution to the epidemic of depression stemming from isolation among elders.
While robots are far from new, the innovation of using them to aid elders is an up and coming idea. With more research on the effects of robots on those who lack companionship, there’s a greater inclination among older people to own their own robot. According to Murali Doraiswamy, a Duke University professor of psychiatry and geriatrics, who spoke to _name your source_, robots can “reduce stress and loneliness and can help older people remain healthy and active in their homes.”
However, some experts caution that having a real friend is still the best solution to combat loneliness. Maria Henke, the senior associate dean of the USC School of Gerontology, thinks that the surge of robots in elder homes is a good idea, but not an ideal solution. She points out that no one wants to spend Christmas Eve with a robot and while robots can provide companionship and entertainment, the value of human interaction is irreplaceable.
Despite human interaction being more valuable, robots can still play an important role in the lives of the elderly. They can provide constant companionship, which can be especially valuable to seniors who live alone. They can also function as a security system, which is especially helpful for the elders who may not be able to protect themselves and are in more vulnerable positions. Robots can even help with household chores, like cleaning the floor or turning the lights off and on, which can allow the elderly to focus on their health and hobbies.
Whether it be just curious consumers, like Audrey and Ken, or genuinely lonely seniors, the rise of robots is rapidly expanding into treating broader mental health issues. By using robots, the elderly can regain their sense of purpose and ambition in life, while feeling secure and valued.
