Runaway Tortoise Rescued on Train Tracks

By: Yi Chen

A pet tortoise, Solomon, would never have predicted his adventure a week ago. According to Newsround, four trains were delayed after the reptile was spotted on the tracks. It was around 6 pm on Friday, July 19 when the train driver made the odd discovery on the train tracks.

The tortoise, who managed to get on a train ride, was saved by engineers who moved him to safety away from the train track. “Network Rail and SWR staff moved the tortoise to a position of safety on the platform, including a short ride on the train itself,”said South Western Railway.

He was caught on the tracks near Ascot, in Berkshire, U.K.. According to The Independent, engineers picked the tortoise up and put it on the next passing train, with arrangements to drop it off at a vet in Staines. However, the owner was able to pick him up from the train station.

Train transportation was back on track around 7 pm. Though Solomon had a happy ending, people were cautioned to watch their pets. “While we are delighted that this story has a happy ending and can reassure passengers that our ‘everyone home safe, every day’ ambitions extend to pets, we must remind everyone that the railway is dangerous,” said a spokesperson from Network Rail.
