After signing with the Philadelphia Flyers on May 7, Russian goalie Ivan Fedotov was arrested in Russia after authorities said he planned to evade military service.

Previously, Fedotov played for CSKA Moscow, a team that has ties with the Russian army. The team’s name translates to “Central Sports Club of the Army.” Young Russian men are required to serve at least one year of military service.

Fedotov was arrested at a hockey rink in St. Petersburg and brought to an army enlistment office.

This famous goalie was recognized as the best in Russia’s KHN hockey league, as he’d helped CSKA Moscow to the Gagarin Cup.

Fedotov had planned to compete for a spot at the Flyers’ training camp in the fall. Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations, Chuck Fletcher, said the Flyers “are aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.
