Sailing

On the Fitz

Sailing

By Vincent Liu

One day in the middle of summer, on a gigantic lake full of lakeweed, near tons

of mountains, in the middle, while two of my friends and I were having fun, there was a gust of wind, and the boat flipped over. We all laughed.

Here’s is how it all started. One day, I was at home and my mom suddenly announced that I was going to go to sailing camp. When I first heard that I was kind of excited. But once I got there, I was beginning to feel nervous because I didn’t know anybody. I felt like I didn’t fit in. Everybody already had friends and they were all talking to each other about stuff and I just felt lonely.

After a few days or so, I started making friends and having fun. It was great! We got to actually go sailing on real sailboats. There was a part of the lake called the sand bar and it attracted a lot of people. The sand bar is like a mini beach with no waves and also no rocks and no seaweed or lake weed. It’s actually a very fun place. We even got to dive off of the boats at the sand bar!

The best part about sailing camp is capsizing and ice pops. Capsizing is when the boat flips over halfway. It mostly happens when there’s rough wind or when the boat is very uneven.

The capsizing we did was mostly drills though. Sailing camp was mostly fun, but at the end of the day, we’d always have a chalk talk, which is sort of a quiz. The only good thing about it is that we got ice pops.

Every time before and after sailing you would have to set up and take apart the sailboat. You have to put on the sails, rudder, and that stuff.

One day there was a small storm out and we had to sail in the rough wind. I felt like we were going at 60 mph, it was so fast. My hands got really tired from steering the ship. Also, the boat capsized like ten times. The speed made it really fun, though.

Most of the time before we went sailing, we would play scatter ball and wait until there was some wind. It was really fun.

Then it was the last day. I was having so much fun I kind of didn’t want to leave! So I tried to make the most out of it. We had so much fun. We got to go tubing on floaties being pulled by the sailboat, we got to do tons of capsizing and dry capsizing. We also got to go to the sand bar, and that was probably the most fun I’ve had in my life!
