San Diego’s Public Libraries are Hosting Pride Month

By: Jenny Liang

Libraries in San Diego are setting up pride flag displays with books, music, and videos. Many people are happy to see such colorful displays to support LGBTQ+.

However, libraries in San Diego have many people that disagree about the pride month books, but one specific library in San Diego, The Rancho Penasquitos Library, has two patrons who have decided to check out 14 books and aren’t planning to return them, unless the library takes the pride stand down.

One of the council members, Marty Von Wilpert, came out and said that the LGBTQ+ community will not be disrespected like that. For the first time, she came out and talked about her sexuality. She paired up with the San Diego Library foundation in the LGBTQ center to fundraise money to buy new books to replace the pride month books and other needs.

After these great accomplishment Marty Von Wilpert said “What has started as an incident based on hate and disagreement has bloomed into a successful fundraiser and not only pride displays at one library but all 36 libraries.”

The library director responded to the two patrons who did not plan to return the books and sent them a message that said Libraries are a welcoming place.

She mentioned if books aren’t returned in 30 days the patrons could be charged to replace them and if the bill isn’t paid, it could go collections to.

Some Extra Details: some Libraries in San Diego have free read aloud to celebrate pride month.
