Scientists Discover How Golden Staph Can Turn Fatal

By: Kevin Lee

Melbourne scientists reveal a groundbreaking discovery on how the golden staph can turn into a deadly bacteria.

“This new knowledge will guide research to find new ways to combat these infections,” says Tim Stinear, a molecular microbiologist at the Doherty Institute.

The discovery has been posted online, where the Doherty Institute reveals how the golden staph hides from the immune system.

This discovery can help make better ways to treat the golden staph. About 4,000 patients in Australia get diagnosed with golden staph, 20 percent of those patients don’t make it out alive. Maybe this discovery can reduce those odds.

According to Kids News, “Dr Hachani(the one in charge of the team) said one in three people unknowingly carry Golden staph in their nose or on their skin and for most this ‘colonisation*’ is harmless.”

However, if the golden staph goes into your blood vessels, you could get a serious illness. It can also be fatal.

There are samples of the golden staph from real patients donated to the Doherty Institutes to provide data. Dr. Hachani’s team revealed that the golden staph is a Trojan Horse, or a bacteria that seems harmless, but can be fatal.

According to Kids News, “By 2050 the United Nations estimates that up to 10 million deaths annually could be caused by superbugs* and associated forms of antimicrobial* resistance, with fears it could become a global pandemic more deadly than Covid.”
