Moss that grows in both the Mojave Desert and Antarctica could help establish life on the planet of Mars. The special moss is known to survive through rough conditions like exposure to radiation, extreme cold, or droughts. Researchers say it is a key element to creating a safe place that is possible for humans to live in.
In a research project recently published on July 1st, Chinese research team reported that the moss quickly recovered from almost no water, or complete dehydration. It could also live within temperatures as low as -196 Celcius. The moss, called Syntrichia caninervis, might be able to be planted on Mars and help other plants grow and thrive.
To test what the moss could really survive through, scientists set up an area that had similar conditions to what Mars would be like. The moss survived in this harsh environment and was able to regenerate even after a week of exposure. It is extremely hopeful that the moss will be able to survive both the long trip to Mars and the tough conditions on the surface of the planet.
Originally just a lowly desert moss, it has since come a long way, demonstrating its strength and resilience to the world. Scientists and researchers hope to proceed to send samples of the moss into outer space to test if the moss can really survive in the environment.
