Munich, Germany- Scotland fans were discouraged on Friday night when Scotland suffered a massive defeat against Germany. The final score of the soccer game was 5-1 in favor of Germany.

The disappointing game was an opening match of the UEFA European Championship, which is a soccer competition held every four years to determine the best team in Europe. The competition was founded in 1958, and includes 24 teams that have been selected through a qualification process.

The first goal was scored by Florian Wirtz of Germany, followed by three more consecutive goals scored by Germany. At 43 minutes, a penalty was awarded to Germany after Ryan Porteous, a defender for Scotland, stole the ball from İlkay Gündoğan along with adding a dangerous tackle at the end. German striker Kai Havertz then proceeded to score the penalty kick.

Good news for the Scotland Fans came when Antonio Rudiger, a defender for Germany, scored an own goal after he used his head to direct the ball into the net. The score, at 87 minutes, was 4 (Germany) to 1 (Scotland). At 93 minutes, Emre Can, midfielder of Germany, scored the game’s final goal. Germany enjoyed the biggest win by a host nation in an opening match, and their biggest win at the UEFA European Championships.

Both Scotland and Germany will play Hungary and Switzerland later in the tournament. Will Germany, the host country, win the tournament, amid the Scotland Fans’ disapproval, or will Scotland climb over the mountain and rise up to the challenge? The future awaits us!
