Simone Biles Wins a Gold Medal in the Olympics

By: Gianna Ng

On August 1, Simone Biles, a world-famous gymnast, won a gold medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning her second Olympic title.

At the beginning of her routine, Biles first performed the hardest vault, the Yurchenko double pike. Because she perfected this extremely difficult move, Biles received eight-tenths of a point higher than her competitor, Rebecca Andrade.

During the uneven bars, where gymnasts swing from one bar to another, Simone Biles made a mistake that lowered her to third place. She positioned herself incorrectly while swinging from the high bar to the lower one. Fortunately, her teammate, Sunisa Lee, started to gain points and rise in the rankings.

Many gymnasts at the Olympics struggled with wobbling and falling on the beam, but Biles performed an extremely difficult routine with minimum unsteadiness. Her steady balance while executing her moves left her a couple tenths of a point behind Andrade.

Simone Biles became the first woman in 50 years to win two Olympic national titles after her floor routine. She perfectly executed the two difficult moves made by her and flawlessly completed her program. In the end, she ranked first place, earning a gold medal. Her rival, Andrade, moved down a level to second place.
