Spain reports second death from monkeypox

By: April Yan

Barcelona, Spain, has recently reported a second death from monkeypox as the disease spreads from Africa to Europe and North America.

The same day that Spain announced its first death, Brazil also reported a death because of monkeypox. The Ministry based in Madrid said that both deaths in Spain were young men.

The global monkeypox outbreak has caused more than 22,000 cases in almost 80 countries since May. In Africa, there is an estimate that more than 75 people have died. These deaths occurred mainly in Nigeria and Congo, where the disease has already started spreading to the West.

Most people who have gotten monkeypox are men who have sex with men. The effects of the virus are fevers, body aches, chills, fatigues, and hives. The disease is contagious and is spread by skin contact. It can also spread through bedsheets and other objects touched by someone with monkeypox.

Although many are rushing to get vaccines, there is a limit as to how many vaccines are currently available. Wealthier countries have greater access to these vaccines, but poorer countries like Nigeria, tend to face difficulties obtaining the vaccines. As a result, the inability of vulnerable nations in Africa places them in greater danger of spreading monkeypox cases.
