Sports Rise During Covid-19

By: Audrey Xie

Ever since the pandemic has started, people started participating in sports a lot more, specifically females.

It’s amazing how the amount of basketball players grew 219,000 since Covid-19, and football grew the second most, 196 thousand players. Volleyball gained 121,000 players in 3rd place, while in last, Cricket gained 102,000.

Many of those numbers were females, and ever since the Covid-19 pandemic started, women sport teams grew about 200 thousand. According to the Australian Sports Commission, studies show that most women are now active.

“I saw girls skating and doing tricks on TV and YouTube and wanted to give it a go,” Ella Smit said. She says she was inspired to start skating when she watched 14-year-old Sky Brown skate at the Olympics.

“A lot of people loved skating during the pandemic to keep active,” Bernard Griffiths, president of the Victorian Skateboarding Association, stated.

“Female participation continued to grow every year,” Griffiths added.

It’s amazing how a pandemic can push people to try out new things, and lead people to a great new hobby.
