Spotting AI Images on Social Media

By: Alana Zhang

The picture of Katy Perry attending the 2024 Met Gala, drawn by AI has gone viral on X, this one picture went viral by getting over 16 million views, and many viewers had expressed their shock at how AI had drawn the beautiful picture. Soon after this Image was debunked, people found out that Katy Perry didn’t actually attend the Met Gala. This was found by seeing the 2018 Carpet of the Met Gala, AI has reached higher levels of realism.

The pictures of AI are getting better quickly, but there still is a way to tell if the picture is made by a human or not. First, take an example from the Ryan Reynolds Image made by AI. The image does look very realistic but it is not completely real, because the fingers of Ryan Reynold are unnaturally shaped and the F1 shirt is completely written in gibberish.

There is another way of telling how the image is made by a human or not, this time you need to check for too much perfection, the example will be with an image of Ariana Grande. This time the face is very smooth and gives away that it was made by AI.

Lastly, is a picture of the joker, if you look at the hands and face you can see that it looks quite real, but there is a way to tell if the image is made by AI or human. All you need to do is a reverse image search. It is more common to find a real image of the drawing than finding an AI drawn image of it.
