Students Give Their Unfair School Clear Perspective

By: Jeffery Liu

Imagine you are in an organization and the way they’re treating you and the other students is unfair. What would you do? Would you give in and let yourself be treated that way? Is there another way to address the problem? Maybe, you could rebel. In today’s example, students did rebel against the school for their unfair dress codes. But, the question still remains, are dress codes fair?

At Melbourne’s Mordialloc College, a year 10 student was isolated from other classmates because he dyed his hair in protest against an unfair school policy. The school forced him to wear a beanie over his head until his dyed hair color fades away. Many students thought this was unfair and started rebelling against the school and giving the school a clear view on how they felt. Many students start joining the year 10 student who got outcasted for dying his hair.

This case about how Students resisting feel unfair about school policies they feel are unfair is happening in many places. At Officer Secondary College, students say that over 100 of them were sent to the library for violating school dress code.. Everyone feels that the school policies are unfair and hope that rebelling might result in change. Another school is trying to stop the anger their students are showing due to their dress codes by making a new uniform dress code which is cheaper to buy. This is to ensure the students go back to wearing clothes that fit the dress code. But, teachers do have reasons for their dress codes. It’s to make sure the students are neat, and ensure that they won’t be distracted by what they are wearing.

“I want kids in high school to feel like their voices are heard and matter,” the year 10 student from Melbourne’s Mordialloc College said. He believed that student’s voices should be heard and they should be able to have a choice in how they dress. KidsNews once again informs us that, “Sisters Amayah and Safhira Rowe were excluded from the school, located around two hours from Melbourne, for contravening school policies by not tying back their box-braided hair.” Here we see another example of discrimination against students who wish to dress themselves differently.

All in all, we can see how the students from various schools are rebelling because they despise the school dress code and wish to have a choice to dress themselves. From this, we can learn that students should not just be treated in ways that they think are unfair. Dress codes may seem fair or not and it is important to remember that each side has its own reasons for thinking what they do. We can conclude that everyone should have a voice..
