Sustainable Art: Designers in the UK Create “See Monster” From Old Oil Rig

By: Andrew Lu

What would you do with an old oil rig? A team in Weston-super-Mare (England) got the chance to use an oil platform from the North Sea into a spectacular piece of artwork: The “See Monster.” Mind you, we’re talking about the “See Monster,” not Sea Monster.

The retired oil rig took a long journey to where it’d forever sit (hopefully). It is the size of a football field. It was carried with a cargo ship all the way from the North Sea to Weston-super-Mare’s seaside.

The artists conducting this project want people to think more eco-friendly.

The entire monster would be 35 meters – that’s pretty tall! Finished, it would be fifteen meters taller than the Angle of the North – and just eleven meters less than Nelson’s Column.

The piece is more than just that! When completed, it’ll feature 4 levels – and a waterfall. It’d also exhibit its 6,000-piece gallery of scales. The fourfour decks willfeature a green oasis, an amphitheater, and a broadcast studio!

Mark Canniford from North Somerset Council said: “The idea of bringing this back and showing people how this can be of benefit and the lessons that could be learned is fantastic.”

The 450-ton platform, shipped all the way from the Netherlands, arrived in Weston-super-Mare just over a week ago.

Patrick O’Mahony, the founder of Newsubstance, a group in the project, said, “These giants are all over the world, and no one has ever tried to do this before. It’s like rehabilitation. It’s spent its life taking from the Earth and now it’s time for it to give back.”

The project is part of the UK’s giving back project, called Unboxed. The project will give back – to not only our community – but our home, the Earth.
