Teenage Conversations These Days Sounds Like Another Language

By: Yiling Sun

In the ever-evolving world of language, Gen Z teenagers are slowly developing their very own language. Born around the early 2010s, this generation is known for its creative and dynamic use of slang, driven by the rapid spread of information on social media platforms.

Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X helped develop the common slangs these teenagers use today. A viral TikTok video or a trending hashtag on X can introduce a new slang term to millions overnight.
Some common slangs include:

No cap: this phrase, meaning “no lie” or “for real,” is often used to emphasize the truthfulness of a statement. For example, “That movie was amazing, no cap.”

Bet: used to agree with someone or confirm something, like saying “okay” or “sure.” For instance, “You want to go to the mall?” “Bet.”

Stan: originating from the Eminem song of the same name, “stan” is a combination of “stalker” and “fan.”

It describes someone who is an extremely devoted fan. It can also be used as a verb: “I stan Beyoncé.”

Sus: short for suspicious or suspect, this term describes someone or something that seems off or questionable. For example, “That new guy in class seems sus.”

Periodt: An emphasized form of “period,” used to conclude a statement definitively. For instance, “She is the best singer, periodt.”

Tea: refers to gossip or news. Asking “What’s the tea?” is equivalent to asking for the latest information or drama.

Simp: a term for someone who is overly attentive or submissive to someone they are attracted to, often to the point of being seen as desperate.

These Gen Z terms are widely used by many teenagers across the globe. But it isn’t just Gen Z; Gen Alpha will continue the legacy of slangs, and so will other generations. What a skibidi brain rot!
