The case of the missing people

By: Harvey Shen

One day, five friends, Tammy, Temmy, Timmy, Tommy, and Tummy, were in Tommy’s house. Then, Tummy came up to Temmy.

“I wish I were like you, Temmy,” said Tummy. “I’m just a plain, regular person.”

“Cheer up, Tummy!” said Temmy. “You’ll find your luckiness one da- whoa!”

Temmy had fallen onto his bookshelf. It revealed a secret room. Temmy and Tummy went in. Temmy felt surprised.

“Oh, a wizard’s lair!” said Tummy.

Suddenly, Tammy, Timmy, and Tommy all peeked through the hole caused by Temmy’s fall.

“What’s in here?” asked Timmy.

“Let’s see,” said Temmy. “Oh, a book with something on it!” And he read it out loud.

“Whatever number you write in the air, it’s how many colors you will share!”

“What does that mean?” asked Tammy.

“It means that whatever number we write, it’s that many different colors we will be!” said Tommy.

“Let’s give it a go,” said Tummy. “I’ll start! Let’s see…”

Tummy drew a number, a straight vertical line in the air to make a 1.

Suddenly, the five friends all became red.

“We’re all red!” said Tommy.

“This isn’t that interesting,” said Timmy.

“My turn!” said Tammy.

Tammy drew a curve, then another in the air to make the number 3.

Suddenly, Tammy, Temmy, Timmy, Tommy, and Tummy physically became red, orange, and yellow.

“Now I get where this is going,” said Timmy.

“This is kind of fun; let’s try again.” Said Temmy.

Temmy drew a circle and a vertical line under it to make the number 9.

Suddenly, the five friends all became red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, and grey.

“Wow!” said Timmy.

“This is really colorful,” said Tommy. “My turn!”

Tommy drew a round oval to make the number 0.

“Zero!” he cried. “Zero colors!”

“Uh oh,” murmured Temmy.

Suddenly, the five friends all became invisible.

“Where are you guys?” someone said.

“Hello?”

“I can’t see you!”

Someone knocked a table and a chair onto the ground.

“Maybe there’s an anti-invisible charm in here,” said Temmy, flipping a book. “Ah-ha! Here’s one! You just have to write the first letter of your name.”

Temmy drew a plus sign, but the vertical line was slightly longer to make a letter t.

Suddenly, the five friends all became their normal colors.

“Let’s get out now before something worse happens!” said Tummy.

Tammy, Temmy, Timmy, Tommy, and Tummy dashed out of the wizard’s lair, and Tummy, the last to come out, closed the bookshelf.

“That was quite an adventure!” said Tammy.
