On August 1st, 2023, a series of wildfires burst out in Maui, Hawaii, causing the deaths of 93 people by Sunday. In the resort town of Lahaina, the wildfires have obliterated buildings and melted cars. Investigators were only able to investigate the blaze 4 days later, due to the severity of the wildfire.
Experts are uncertain as to what or who caused the wildfire, but they think the biggest possibility is that an active power line could have fallen in the high winds. Rescue crews, who had cadaver-sniffing dogs, have only covered 3 percent of the area. 86 percent of Lahaina’s brunt land was residential. While the fire was happening, some people were forced to stay in a boat on the Pacific Ocean due to the wildfire’s damage.
According to Yahoo! News, Josh Green, the Governor, of Maui, said, “We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them healthcare, and then turn to rebuilding.”
That wildfire was the deadliest US wildfire that has happened in more than a century! The federal emergency workers raced to the old town of Lahaina to find human remains or other things. Some had a bright orange X, which was used to record initial search. Other were marked with HR, which represents that they found human remains there.
