The Dome

By: Ethan Chau

Ever since John moved to the Dome, his life has been spectacular. During his stay, he learned new things and experienced a true utopia.

The Dome is an enormous island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and a corporation known as Devcorp discovered the place. Unlike the other regions of the Earth, the Dome is made up of a strange, sticky soil called Tex. Despite the island’s weird characteristics, such as its low gravity and accelerated time zone, the Dome was declared habitable after Emile Tennison, an adventurer from Africa, survived a month on the island.

On the Dome, trees grow everywhere, the air is always fresh, and the scenery is beautiful. Resources like food and water are also abundant. However, strange creatures inhabit this island. For instance, the cromite is a crow with aspects of an insect. It has the wings of a fly, the legs of a praying mantis, a normal beak, and the eyes of a spider. The cromites ravage the streets for food, but they aren’t hostile to the residents of the Dome and can help fertilize crops by urinating on them.

Besides the eerie animals, the Dome offers brilliant living conditions for its citizens. Homes are free, and each house contains the necessities a human would need, such as a bed, a refrigerator, a washing machine, a sink, and more. Every abode also has a unique feature. Some houses contain levitating furniture, robot assistants, and other types of machinery.

Although the Dome is an incredible place to live, the laws are strict. Littering can lead to 5 months in jail or a fine of 30,000 dollars. Any crime will lead to an Evaluation. An Evaluation is a painful punishment that brainwashes the criminal through a machine known as the Refresher. As of now, four people have experienced an Evaluation, and all of them died after three days.

Currently, John lives in a home that has a robot assistant named Stacy. He enjoys every second of his stay. However, through our database, we, the officials at Devcorp, discovered that John committed multiple accounts of theft in the past. Despite his criminal record, John won’t participate in an Evaluation, but he’ll be a test subject in our latest experiment.
